As the year winds down and the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect—not just on what you’ve achieved, but on the people who helped make it possible.

In our business, trust and relationships are everything. A simple act of gratitude can go a long way toward deepening connections with your clients, partners and team—and it’s one of the most effective (and human) growth strategies you can practice.

Why gratitude matters

Clients stay with you because they feel valued. A genuine “thank you” reminds them that their trust and commitment matter, and that you don’t take the relationship for granted. Gratitude also helps you shift perspective: from stress and uncertainty to appreciation for what’s already working and a powerful mindset to close out the year strong.

“The moment we feel entitled to something—whether it’s success, recognition, or comfort—we disconnect from gratitude. Gratitude can’t coexist with entitlement. The antidote is humility: remembering that everything we have is a gift and an opportunity to serve.”
Brian Johnson, Areté: Activate Your Heroic Potential

When you approach your work with humility and recognize that every client relationship is a privilege, you show up with more authenticity, care and appreciation. That mindset doesn’t just make you a better person; it makes you a better advisor.

Simple ways to show gratitude this season

  • Send a handwritten note to a few key clients or COIs. Mention something specific you appreciate.
  • Host a small appreciation event—a casual coffee or “cheers to the year” happy hour.
  • Express gratitude in meetings. A short “thank you for staying committed to your goals” can go a long way.
  • Give intentionally. Choose gifts that are personal, local or aligned with your client’s interests.
  • Thank your support team. A quick note to your internal partners or staff means more than you realize.

Turn gratitude into growth

Gratitude naturally strengthens trust—and trusted clients are the ones who refer. When thanking a client, gently reinforce your value:

“I’ve really appreciated the opportunity to work with you this year—your commitment to your goals has been inspiring. If you know someone else who could benefit from this kind of partnership, I’d love the opportunity to help.”

Your call to action

This week, make your Gratitude List—five clients, partners or team members you’re especially thankful for.

Take 30 minutes to send a quick note, message or call. It doesn’t have to be big—it just has to be genuine.

These small actions strengthen relationships, reinforce trust and set the stage for a great year ahead.
